Finding our place

I’m off to NYC for a marathon session of portfolio reviews (isn’t plane-net great). It’s interesting to have to do such a deep self evaluation when looking at potential reviewers and seeing how they either fit or don’t with the work I have to show right now. I do feel like we’ve really started to hone in on a style, or more so a good foundation for the evolution of a style. I believe good work is the result of a process that stems off of a longer journey. The creative back and forth between Stacey and I flows easily and we are able to turn an idea over pretty quickly. If anything, we are starting to amass a backlog of ideas, some of which I’m afraid we’ll never get to.

It is also a good self evaluation to see if I’m on the path I really desire, the one that is challenging, rewarding and interesting. With just two of those, the work quickly can become wrote. Some ideas require only expertise, but can offer great reward for performing them. But hat sweet spot of having your heart ooze its way into the work gives it that extra tingle.

Next week is about seeing who that might work well for. Some folks can see it right away and recognize where and when it might work, even if not for them. I suspect they too are in their place where those three things are coming together. But I’ve also met those who cannot see into the work and only offer hollow, pre-prepared criticisms. I have even attempted to reach across the table and demonstrate where it was there but it fell on deaf ears. But at times the work can also just not resonate and the message just misses.

So I’m getting ready to jump into a whirlwind of ideas and thoughts. It will be interesting to see where I come out on the other side. Oh yeah, and I’m bringing stuff like this … a little bit of awesomeness we put together with Alex Pardee (more to come later).
