Received news the other day that two of our photos were selected for the 2009 APA Something Personal. There were a ton of entries for the 100 spots in the show and the judges committee consisted of top creatives at places like Goodby, Cutwater, Eleven, Wired, Elixir. And it gets cooler … there will be a happenin’ opening for the show at LeftSpace on Friday, Dec 11th (go get your free invite here). The turnout is apparently around 1400! And after the show one of the images will hang in Gallery 645 until the end of January.
I was chatting with Michael Winokur the other night and he said the entries were of a particular quality this year and having two photos in the show was pretty awesome. And here’s the super cool part … this image of Chase (Ford SF) nabbed a 4th place Judges Award! Too cool! Hope to see you there!

Had a great brunch with Colton Lawrence the other morning. He directed THE SEX MOVIE that I cut for him a couple of years back. He’s down in LA looking to put together his next film, either a follow up to the aforementioned or a angst-ridden love triangle. Either way, he does have a way with words.
One thing is clear with Colton … he really understands the business of film making. He keeps his stories tidy and therefore easy to produce. His last feature was shot in nine days with plenty of coverage. Now it wasn’t a visual feast, more of a roundtable discussion. But the story fit the means and there were a couple of places where you stepped into “private areas” to have discussions where a more traditional setup could occur.
Our meeting was timely as the launching pad for THE SEX MOVIE was certainly the premier at the Frameline Film Festival … where FIONA’S SCRIPT is showing in a couple of weeks. Hopefully Florencia will be able to turn the business end of things toward her favor. She reported during our coloring session yesterday that she has a new script in hand to accompany on her voyage (and handy tool for filmmakers). And the new color is way more mainstream. There’s still a story line that supports her evolution, but it’s not so much of a visual leap. Theory vs. reality.
I just wanted to congratulate and recognize filmmakers Scott Solary and Luci Westphal for getting their film ALL GODS CHILDREN out there. Mark and I met up with them at the Sarasota Film Festival and felt an instant kinship. Both of our films were under funded, not connected in the business and dealt with difficult subjects. Both issues still exists and there is very little being done about it. This is an important step for them in their campaign to raise awareness … follow up with screenings and discussions. I know the troubles they’ve had getting the film finished this year, and I thought they deserved a moment in the spotlight for a job well done.
