musings on my cinematic wanderings

Pied Piper Photos

We had a blast yesterday working out a Pied Piper concept on wonderful set Stacey built in the garage. Our studio is a mess of framing, plumbers, electricians etc. and we decided to not do a full day of shooting in there (although it’s not stopping us from a shorter shoot next week). Dawn Tunnell was passing through town and we had to take advantage of her mad makeup skills.

And this gave me an excuse for testing out the Canon 5D MKII to see how I liked the workflow. I found focusing on it less than ideal, but the auto-focus seemed not to jam me up (the real proof is in the pudding). We’ll see how Stacey likes the added info.

We used Frazer from Stars as our Piper etc. and Macy and Chase from Ford as our darling / creepy children. They were right in the flow of the project and required little noodling into place. Always nice as then we can focus on the little details to make it super kick ass.

We crammed in as many looks as possible (as we like to roll) giving Stacey stacks of images to pour through and find the gems. It felt like we walked away with a number of good ones and it might be tough to separate the creamiest. And it’s always a joy to have on Allison Cohen with her fab wardrobe skills and Lauren Stocker helping out on lights and camera.

Check for images soon on FB and DA … and I’m sure a couple will land on our MM.

cinegear …

I jetted down to CineGear this year to see what was going on and talk to folks about outfitting out studio space. I took a look at the various power distribution systems and of course handled the grip gear. It was interested to get an idea of the various components, but ultimately I didn’t walk away with certainty.

Ultimately, it’s up to us to listen to our gut and make the decisions and go forward (basic business stuff). But it looks like our time frame has moved up (not back) and we may get into the studio in early August! A review of the schedule with Chris today put us on the fast track (time for hard and fast decisions).

sex and movies

Had a great brunch with Colton Lawrence the other morning. He directed THE SEX MOVIE that I cut for him a couple of years back. He’s down in LA looking to put together his next film, either a follow up to the aforementioned or a angst-ridden love triangle. Either way, he does have a way with words.

One thing is clear with Colton … he really understands the business of film making. He keeps his stories tidy and therefore easy to produce. His last feature was shot in nine days with plenty of coverage. Now it wasn’t a visual feast, more of a roundtable discussion. But the story fit the means and there were a couple of places where you stepped into “private areas” to have discussions where a more traditional setup could occur.

Our meeting was timely as the launching pad for THE SEX MOVIE was certainly the premier at the Frameline Film Festival … where FIONA’S SCRIPT is showing in a couple of weeks. Hopefully Florencia will be able to turn the business end of things toward her favor. She reported during our coloring session yesterday that she has a new script in hand to accompany on her voyage (and handy tool for filmmakers). And the new color is way more mainstream. There’s still a story line that supports her evolution, but it’s not so much of a visual leap. Theory vs. reality.
