musings on my cinematic wanderings

who cut your hair?

Had  a wonderful couple of shoots sandwiching our jaunt out for a wedding. Andreas the traveling hair stylist was passing through town and we had to nab him and his big hair. We’re going through the different shots now and will have something resembling a series soon … they’re super cool. The first series involved a rather Giger / Burton inspired set that had large curves and dark swaths. The hair was doing some crazy great stuff in structured and unstructured ways. Here’s an example with Anne Marie from Stars with a large braided piece domed out above her. Make up by Ashley Joy Beck (who helped with an awesome portrait of Stacey as well) decked out in some fresh duds from Eirik Aswang.

The follow up shoot was a simply inspired set of shadows … not my given style per se, a little too much light behaving flatly. But once embraced and moved past, I think we capture some great takes. Alexandra from Look was repeatedly tied to the set to help achieve some of the looks (including the one below). Marcelo Donari applied the powder, Purgatoria brought in some fashions. Lauren Stoker helped to dial in the lights once again. A little destat in post and working with the shadows gave us this nicely finished frame (thanks Stacey).

HFS POTW on FPB!

Schnykies! I dropped off one of the photos of Soo Joo from Ford the other day on the Fashion Photography Blog and … this morning there was an lovely email from the very talented Melissa Rodwell saying that we had been awarded the FPB Picture of the Week!

This is a wonderful recognition for the work and talents of a superb team. Dawn Tunnell came down from Seattle with gobs of hair and great makeup ideas (assisted by Jihyun Kim). Mash that together with the colorful gowns of Cory Tran and plop that in front of Stacey’s amazing set. Lauren Stocker was on hand to help shape and tweak the lighting and fan fog. Pick a nice 85mm portrait lens on a Nikon D3X at 1/200 and about f11 and you get (after a bit of retouching) …

The lighting setup was a Profoto beauty dish with grid as the key off to camera right. A back light raking from the same side both the curved willow and Soo Joo. Camera left saw a 5′ Octabank with crate turned way low to expand and hold the knee. Plus another strobe above and camera left backlighting the fog and catching her just a touch.

We had a total blast this day (also with Sydney from Stars in the picture in the previous). It’s nice when a little inspiration can go a long way.
